winter running gearColder months make it harder to get motivated and run through brisk weather and snowy trails, but dressing properly can help make training for that springtime mud run more enjoyable.

Take a look at the tips below and check out the video with Tim VanOrden, owner of Running Raw, as he illustrates the proper attire for running in unbearably cold weather conditions.

If you’re that serious about your training, follow the tips below. Happy running!

How to dress for cold runs:

  • Wear a wool or fleece hat to keep your head warm.
  • Purchase a neck gaitor to help keep your neck area insulated. You can also pull this up to keep your nose and mouth warm.
  • Lather up with chap stick and/or vaseline which both trap heat and prevent chapping.
  • Proper materials for colder runs include: dryfit, thinsulate, thermax, coolmax and silk. Avoid cotton; when this material is wet, it stays wet!
  • Wear a waterproof outer layer to avoid snow and rain from being absorbed into your other layers.
  • Remember to wear gloves!
  • Listen to music? Here's a way to stay warm and still listen to your motivating tunes: HVLO headphones.
